Project: River Itchen Bank Reconstruction
Client: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust
This project took place on a publicly accessible site where activities have seriously damaged marginal habitats leading to excessive bank erosion.
Eroded materials were replaced with alluvial silts recovered from an on-line pond at the same site. Hazel bundles were used to retain the new material and the site was planted with River Itchen progeny species grown at WLW’s plant nursery.
Pond desilting utilised dewatering silt-bags to overcome site access challenges. New habitat areas were protected with low-visual-impact fencing to en sure that plants establish while the site remains open for recreation and dog-walking. Finally a robust river access area was constructed to enable site users and dogs to continue to enjoy the river.
