Project: River Medina Urban Channel Enhancement

Client: Natural Enterprise

Aquascience Ltd were successful in tendering for a ‘design and build’ contract to enhance 6 separate reaches on the River Medina with the objective of enhancing the physical diversity of a highly modified river channel.

Methods included channel narrowing using brash mattresses, installation of LWD and ‘naturalising’ concrete-lined urban sections by the creation of robust vegetated berms.

This watercourse is similar to the Welland in that it is characterised by low flows for most of the time. However, prolonged rainfall or storm events result in a dramatic rise in river levels. Consequently enhancement designs needed to be resilient to these events. Soft engineering techniques were used, and designs and materials carefully chosen to ensure longevity.

As with many of our projects special attention was paid to the planting scheme. We ensured that appropriate species were selected and installed in conditions in which they would thrive and provide protection to the soft-engineering. Large woody debris installations were installed using methods which guaranteed they would stay fixed and not cause flood risk by blocking structures downstream during storm events.

Project objectives were principally the enhancement of channel habitats to precede a phase II of works aimed at improving fish passage. The success of the works is best illustrated by recent fish survey work carried out by the Environment Agency ( see text below). Prior to works this site held no fish. It comprised a featureless concrete channel with a normal and uniform water depth of 80mm.

These works were completed in 2011 (although we subsequently have done additional LWD work on the same watercourse for the same client). All 6 sites have benefited from the enhancement work and all project elements remain in place despite many significant flow events.
